Guidance issued for a period of National Mourning

Issued 9th September 2022

British Canoeing is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Her Majesty The Queen.

On behalf of our members and the paddling community, we have expressed our deepest condolences to the Royal Family.

A period of National Mourning for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has now commenced.

The period of National Mourning will continue until the end of the day of the State Funeral.

Following the release of the government’s National Mourning Guidance and advice from key stakeholders, British Canoeing has produced the following guidance.

Within the period, there is no obligation to cancel or postpone sporting activity at either elite or grassroots level. However organisers should be mindful of the circumstances and consider marks of respect such as:

  • A period of silence
  • Wearing of black armbands/ribbons
  • Playing of the national anthem

Organisers are however urged to use their own discretion and should consider the appropriateness and viability of an activity. This may involve consultation with venues and volunteers to assess any impacts.

There is also no obligation to cancel or postpone events on the day of the State Funeral, however organisers are asked to be more mindful of the situation.

On the day of the State Funeral, organisations might wish to consider cancelling or postponing events or the closing of venues. They are under no obligation to do so, and this is entirely at the discretion of individual organisations.

British Canoeing would discourage activity taking place, particularly during the funeral itself.

Organisers may want to adjust the event timings so they do not clash with the timings of the funeral service and associated processions.

British Canoeing will continue to review and update our guidance accordingly.

2022 ICF Canoe Slalom Ranking Race – Lee Valley

In preparation for the 2023 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships, British Canoeing and partners are hosting an ICF Ranking Race to allow athletes to train and compete on the Lee Valley course.

The event is due to take place on Saturday 17 & Sunday 18 September.

We are monitoring the situation closely and will provide an update on the event once further details about the State Funeral are announced.
