The inaugural British Canoeing extreme slalom selection event took place 21-22 April, with athletes being chosen for the GB extreme slalom team.
Extreme slalom, an emerging discipline in the sport, involves four athletes racing together in boats down a modified white water course.
Extreme slalom events will be included in the competition schedule at the ICF 2019 Canoe Slalom World Cup, London and was part of the 2017 World Championships in Pau, France.
Paddlers from a range of disciplines took to the water as they looked to secure their spot on the British team for upcoming international competitions this season.
Adventure kayaker, David Bain, stamped his authority on the men’s event, winning all three of the men’s races. He was awarded maximum points for the time trial and both extreme slalom races ahead of Etienne Chappell who took the second spot.
Lizzie Neave, who now paddles as part of the highly successful British rafting team dominated the women’s event, also took three wins from three to secure her place on the team ahead of Gabrielle Ridge.
Etienne Chappell also qualified for the Junior and U23 World Championships where he will be joined by Elliott Goddard and Callum Maceachen respectively.
Gabrielle Ridge also bagged her place on the U23 team along with Cara Lee.
The extreme slalom race course included a launch from a ramp, downstream gates, upstream gates where paddlers can decide which side of the course to go and a 25m roll section where each paddler has to complete a 360 degree roll.
