Today (8 May) marks just 50 days to go until the 2022 ICF Canoe Freestyle World Championships in Nottingham, as the National Water Sports Centre showcases the world’s best canoe freestyle athletes.
Between 27 June – 2 July 2022, competitors from across the globe will come to the East Midlands to battle it out across nine events as they all search for that coveted World Championship title.
This is the first time Great Britain has held the event in over 30 years, with The Bitches in South Wales playing host back in 1991, and athletes will now descend on the world class venue at Holme Pierrepont to claim the 2022 titles.
Britain’s international team has been training hard on the Nottingham feature in preparation for the event, with excitement for a home World Championships growing.
Double Junior World Champion Ottilie Robinson-Shaw can’t wait to compete in front of a home crowd.
“I’m so excited for Nottingham to be hosting the World Championships. Obviously with the competition originally scheduled for last year, we’ve had longer to prepare, but I feel even more ready for the competition this year and I can’t wait.
“It’s really special to have the World Championships here in Nottingham. I can’t wait to have the home crowd cheering us on and showing them what we as a team can do.
“It will be my first World Championships as a senior athlete and winning the European Championships last year fills me with confidence.”
The event will be a great opportunity for canoeing enthusiasts, sports fans and the local community to see the Great Britain team in front of a home crowd.
After a successful 2019 World Championships in Sort, Spain, the team came away with four medals, followed up by three medals at the European Championships in 2021.
An event that is free for all to attend, the 2022 ICF Canoe Freestyle World Championships has plenty of action going on for all to enjoy. The week will house a festival of paddlesports with have a go sessions for those new to the sport, as well as the chance to watch the world’s best in action.
Harry Price, who won junior men’s K1 bronze at the 2018 European Championships said:
“To have a freestyle World Championships in Nottingham is going to be amazing. It’s been a long time coming but I’m really looking forward to getting started now with just 50 days to go.
“I live in Nottingham personally so it’s given me plenty of time to get good time on the feature at the National Water Sports Centre.
“I’m proud to be competing at a home World Championships. If you told me ten years ago I’d be here competing this year I wouldn’t have believed you so I’m really looking forward to showing everyone what freestyle is about.”
