2021 ICF Canoe Freestyle World Championships mark six months to go

Today marks six months to go until the start of the 2021 ICF Canoe Freestyle World Championships.

The event is set to be held at Holme Pierrepont Country Park, home of the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham from 12-17 July 2021. Over 200 of the world’s best canoe freestyle athletes from 25 countries will battle it out across eight events as they look to secure the coveted World Championship title.

Held every two years, the 2021 edition of the Freestyle World Championships will be the first time in 30 years that Great Britain has hosted the event, and the first time the event has included a Masters World Championships within the competition structure.

The 2019 campaign, held in Sort, Spain, saw the British team come away with four medals including gold for Ottilie Robinson-Shaw.

Freestyle Paddler and 2019 competitor, Harry Price, said:

“Since watching footage of the 2013 World Championships I have been obsessed with freestyle and mesmerised with feats of athleticism performed on whitewater.

“It is beyond exciting to have the Championships coming to one of the finest training grounds in the world, the perfect location to showcase the high magnitude of freestyle progression!

“We’re delighted for the opportunity to celebrate our global freestyle community through competition and to inspire the next generation of whitewater paddlers.”

To ensure the health and safety of everyone involved in the event, the ICF and British Canoeing will continue to review the possible implications of Covid-19 and the mitigations we can put in place, in order to make this the safest event possible.

Event Director Andrew Jackson said:

“Three decades have passed since the inaugural Freestyle World Championships were held right here in the UK in 1991 and we’re thrilled to say they’re coming home!

“Despite the impact of Covid-19 you can rest assured that the atmosphere and competition will be amazing, we’re looking forward to seeing the full spirit of freestyle come to life.”
