Today, 28 June 2021, marks one year to go before the rescheduled 2022 ICF Canoe Freestyle World Championships land at Nottinghamshire’s Holme Pierrepont Country Park, home of the National Water Sports Centre.
The festival of freestyle will be the first time in 30 years that Great Britain has hosted the event, and the first time the event has included a Masters World Championships within the competition structure.
Event Director Andrew Jackson said: “One year to go. Wow, it’s been a journey to get here! I’m incredibly grateful that there are signs of normality emerging and am off the scale excited that we will have the chance to run our event. What’s more, it looks like we should be able to go ahead without compromising on areas of our festival. Now’s the time to get planning, get trained and get pumped for what we promise will be an awesome event.”
Jack Garner, Contract Manager at Holme Pierrepont Country Park, home of the National Water Sports Centre said: “Myself and the team at Holme Pierrepont Country Park are looking forward to the prestigious Freestyle World Championships, which are now just 12 months away.
“The past year has been a challenging one for us all, so it’s very positive to see that preparations for this rescheduled event are well on track. We are proud of our strong relationship with British Canoeing and will be doing all we can as a facility to support the smooth running of this highlight event in the freestyle calendar.”
ICF President Jose Perurena, said: “After what has seemed like the longest time for our canoe freestyle family, the one year to go milestone gives us all reason to be excited again.
“We are very grateful to our friends at British Canoeing for their patience and perseverance. While the delays caused by the Covid pandemic have been frustrating for everyone, the opportunity to head to Nottingham in 2022 for our World Championships has been the light at the end of the tunnel.
“Next year’s event will be much more than a World Championship. It will be a celebration of a return to normal life, and where better to do it than at the world-class Nottingham venue.”
The original week of freestyle action was due to take place from 12-17 July 2021, but was postponed due to the ongoing concerns of the Coronavirus pandemic.
